DON'T LET A LOST HOUR TURN INTO A LOST WEEK

Has anyone else taken a few days to recover from the daylight savings “Spring Forward” time change? Whenever this happens I get excited because we have more sunlight as we enter into our evenings, yet am conflicted with the whole thing since it took me several days to finally catch-up on all the things. Living in a state that still follows the outdated daylight savings calendar, I usually feel like I am falling behind every time California springs forward. We are gaining an extra hour of light in our day, but what are we sacrificing for this? We still need to restore and recover every night. Everyone is different and needs a different amount of sleep. Personally I do my best on 8-9 hours. This daylight savings has been a real doozy.

A good night’s sleep is incredibly important for achieving optimal health. The fuller your schedule, the more you must aggressively manage your sleep. It is just as important as diet and exercise for maintaining a clear mind and strong body.

People with short sleep duration tend to weigh significantly more than those who get adequate sleep. Short sleep duration is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity. If you are trying to lose weight, getting quality sleep is absolutely critical.

Sleep is important for cognition, concentration, productivity, and performance. All of these are negatively affected by sleep deprivation. Good sleep, on the other hand, has been shown to improve problem-solving skills and to enhance performance and memory. Poor sleep has been shown to impair brain function.

Studies have found that short sleepers are at far greater risk of heart disease or stroke compared with those who sleep 7 to 8 hours per night. We know that sleep quality and duration can have a major affect on many risk factors. These are the factors believed to drive chronic diseases including heart disease.

Mental health issues such as depression are strongly linked to poor sleep quality and sleeping disorders. It has been estimated that 90% of patients with depression complain about sleep quality. Those with sleeping disorders such as insomnia, or sleep apnea, also report significantly higher rates of depression than those without.

Even a small loss of sleep has been shown to impair immune function. If you get sick often, getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night is essential. Sufficient sleep can improve immune function and help fight the common cold.

Sleep can have a major effect on inflammation in the body. In fact, sleep deprivation is known to activate undesirable markers of inflammation and cell damage.
