Diffusers
Since I don’t use artificial fragrance sprays or scented candles in my home, my favorite thing to use is a diffuser. Many people ask which diffuser I use and recommend. I have tried many types of diffusers, and want to share with you which ones are my absolute favorites.
First off, you should ask yourself the question, “where do I sit and engage or spend a reasonable amount of time in my home?” The reason why I believe it is SO important to ask this question prior to installing a diffuser is because each diffuser has different pros and cons that come into play, as well as, the plain and simple reason being that, I often find myself turning on a diffuser, only to have everyone leave the room moments later. You don’t want a diffuser working, in a room that nobody is in, and you don’t want to waste your precious oils on an empty room.
From my experience, not all diffusers are created equal and some work much better than others. I wish that I’d read a review like this before deciding which to purchase and I hope my experience will be helpful to you.
Here are the different types of diffusers:
Nebulizer
Ultrasonic
Heat
Evaporating
I have not found a heat diffuser or evaporative diffuser that worked as well as a nebulizing, or ultrasonic diffuser does.
You can click on the images to read more about them.
The one exception is a basic heat diffuser. My Dad uses this one, above, in his car. It works decently well in a small space, like a vehicle (and is a much better non-toxic option to those artificial fragrance, car air fresheners).
Another beautiful option, an evaporating diffuser is adorably lovely and decorative in your car. Just be sure to add drops every few days or so, and place this one strategically to disperse the aromatherapy. This one simply clicks into your car vent, and as you heat or cool down your environment, while driving, you are delivered the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy via this small yet simple device. It does not require a charger to work. It doe not require any water. Plus it is a great conversation starter and a popping piece of decor for your interior car environment.
Another version of an evaporating diffuser is in diffuser jewelry. This can come in the form of a small felt pad, a lava bead, or a design made of vegan suede. I own several pieces of diffuser jewelry by now, seeing as my daughter is quite the DIY jewelry designer, with her own Etsy Shoppe coming soon. She loves to make chokers and bracelets using lava beads, and vegan suede. I am dreaming of a beautiful pair of chandelier earrings she will design for me this year, so I can diffuse just inches away from my nose. I love and wear diffuser jewelry, and I went ahead and restrung the pendant with some vintage coral and druzy beads, which only adds to it’s therapeutic energetic properties.
If you are interested in a piece of good quality felt pad diffuser jewelry, I found this one to be of the highest quality. Don’t buy cheap imitations.
DIY:
On a side not, my kids and I have lately been interested in creating jewelry. Many of the pieces have crystals, semi precious gemstones, lava beads, and vegan sueded cord. The lava beads are quite porous and especially useful in keeping your favorite scents around and on you for extended periods of time. Lava Stone is a grounding stone that strengthens one’s connection to Mother Earth.
It gives us strength and courage, allowing us stability through times of change. It provides guidance and understanding in situations where we may need to “bounce back”. A calming stone, it is very useful in dissipating anger. It promotes positive changes where needed in behavioural issues. Essential oils keep their aroma strong for 24-48 hours on the lava beads, as well as on the vegan suede cord. If you have any leather jewelry you can put a drop of essential oil on that too, but you want to make sure its the underside, and not the colored side.
My daughter launched her jewelry line this summer. It is currently being displayed at The Maker Studio in San Francisco. You would need to scroll way down to see the post where they feature her. You can also purchase her designs through her Instagram account, and we will be launching her Etsy shop pretty soon! Nebulizers
Nebulizing diffusers are often considered the most powerful type of diffusers. They can use up an entire 15 mL bottle of On Guard Protective Blend is less than two days. They do not need water or heat to get the essential oil into the air. They work by using an atomizer to create fine, airborne particles of essential oils and blowing them into the air. They attach directly to the bottle of oil. They are usually louder than ultrasonic/humidifying diffusers. Nebulizing diffusers are costlier than others, yet I have not found the need to get one, since many of the others, I use, keep a near-continuous stream of essential oils in the air when you sit close enough to them. Click on the image below to see a larger photograph.
If you think you are interested in a nebulizing diffuser, the Arom-Ace Diffuser with dōTERRA On Guard , is comparable to this one, but the dōTERRA one comes with a bottle of On Guard, which is an even better deal, especially if you are purchasing wholesale.
Ultrasonic Diffusers
Ultrasonic diffusers work in a similar way to nebulizing diffusers by creating a fine mist. The difference is that ultrasonic diffusers use water and essential oils to create a cool mist of water/oils that releases into the air. These types of diffusers require water to run. They are less costly than nebulizing diffusers. There are many options to choose from. They double as a humidifier, so they are beneficial in winter. Some people say that it is not recommended to use citrus oils with this type of diffuser, however I have not had any issues so far.
I have used several different types of ultrasonic diffusers and I’ve found that some work better than others.
These are my favorites, be sure to click on the picture of the diffuser to get more information.
This Aroma Lite Diffuser is my absolute favorite when traveling, and for portable use around the house. It is a powerhouse in a tiny package, and sits quite well on a shelf since the spout is turned sideways. I mostly keep it on the living room table, because it is small enough to not take up too much space, and it is easy to transport. Depending on the mood I am setting, I sometimes like to have 2 diffusers going in a room. You can’t go wrong with this little baby, and I think that the higher cost makes up for the amount of output, size and portability this little number has to offer. It is truly one of the most important essential items that I pack, anytime I am planning for travel, and any kind of overnight adventure, away from home.
The Petal Diffuser will always be my very first fave. I had a very poorly operating diffuser that I purchased at a health food store prior to the Petal, and when I finally got the Petal, (and the proper oils), I got the chance to experience the difference a quality diffuser offers. The petal came with my introductory Kit when I first joined dōTERRA, and I still use it everyday. It is whisper quiet, has two different night lights. It come with a convenient timer of 1, 2 and 4 hours, and a hole in the center, so you may add your oils without having to lift the lid. The Petal is included in with a few different introductory kits!
This diffuser is my absolute favorite when it comes to diffusing without interruption, especially during sleeping hours. It runs for over 10 hours overnight, dispersing aromatherapy into your dreams. If you are looking for a quiet nighttime diffuser, with a fun rainbow light that stops on different colors, and also has the capability to shut off all the light for nighttime sleeping, this diffuser is for you. You can also set the timer on this one, anywhere from 1 hour to continuous diffusing until it runs out of water. It also has an auto shut-off.
I’m obsessed with this handheld diffuser! I keep it in my mommy bag, and have not had any leaks.
You could use this for a dozen reasons. I’m currently using it to help in soothing a sunburn. Sunburns are very tender to the touch. So to be able to mist on the oils onto the skin without having to touch it is wonderful! Of course you can also make a DIY sunburn relief spray.
When traveling on an airplane, I am never without this. I use it as soon as I find my seat with the On Guard blend, in order to, keep germs and bugs at bay in confined quarters. People sitting next to me, usually comment on how wonderful the scent is. The we get to talking about the science of aromatherapy. I love sharing the benefits of dōTERRA essential oils to anyone who is interested in natural solutions.
For headaches I use peppermint, and I inhale and mist just under my nose, it’s perfect. You could also use peppermint for someone that suffers with motion sickness. Perfect to keep in the car ready to go. When I am feeling stressed, I just whip this out, add a drop each of lavender and orange, and it helps me to relax and rejuvenate.
I love using this portable, cord-free, on-the-go, purse, pocket diffuser when I am out and about on the town. It comes in handy when I run into someone who wants to have an essential oil diffused experience, when I share the oils with them, I simply pull this one out, and anywhere, anytime, can start diffusing. Just remember that if you are sharing the oils outside, (like at a playground), you must keep the piece close enough to your face, otherwise the wind may blow it all way.
Another way I love to use this handheld is to mist my face with the anti aging and cleansing oils. I have noticed a lot less of those pesky monthly blemishes erupting on my face when I put a fine mist of melaleuca essential oil on my face after cleansing, and before moisturizing. If you do this, be sure to not get it in your eyes.
Additionally, one of the best places to diffuse is while you are driving. In case you don’t take long road trips, (we do and we love it), it also works wonders when you are stuck in traffic or just coasting along trying to stay awake. I knew I would need a diffuser that would run on it’s own while I drive. I spend a LOT of time in my car, as an active Mom, and entrepreneur. I have tested 2 different car diffuser, and stopped at the second one I tried because it is that good. If you are looking for a reliable, and effective car diffuser, look no further. I have spent countless hours perusing reviews to find you the very best quality at the lowest price and this is the one.
And lastly for those of you who are looking for a glass diffuser, I have tried a few. Not all the ones I tried had as good of an output as the one in the photo above. This one is a good option if you are looking for glass, but I DO NOT recommend you buy the essential oils from this company. Be sure to read my post about Quality, so you can be sure you are getting the purest most therapeutic essential oils possible.
I must confess, I have a total of 9 diffusers inside my home, and of course the car diffuser as well. I have all the one’s I have mentioned above, and a few others. In this post I have written about my favorites , the ones I believe work the best to get you the results you are looking for.
How many diffusers do you have inside your home right now?

I really like the aromalite diffuser Marianna. Thanks for helping me get started with the many health benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils. I’m so glad we bumped into each other.
