The Great Olive Oil Debate
Many of us who love using olive oil in the kitchen and for beauty are kept n the dark about the great olive oil controversy. I too was taken aback when I discovered that, perhaps, not all olive oils are created equal. In fact, the market is flooded with olive oils that are blended with other not so healthy oils, (such as canola) beta carotene, and chlorophyll — then marketed to the consumer as a true organic virgin olive oil.
Even TIME Mag wrote article about this a few years ago.
But how does a person know which oil is good and which is bad? If the Italian mafia are controlling about 80% of the olive oil in Italy? I always urge you to do your research, and I always do mine. I have 2 favorites when it comes to olive oil.
Bariani is local and California made using manzanillo olives. If you are looking for a local to the Bay Area/California , olive oil, it is a good one.
Kasadrinos also uses a cold extraction and is a product of Greece. While I eat mostly local, I love to incorporate amazing flavors from other countries in my cooking. Both oils are family owned, cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil, and organic. I can attest to the true nature and purity of all these oils, and use them daily. So remember, to do diligence on your research, and don’t just pick up the most affordable olive oil you can get at the market. If you are looking for quality, an $8.00 gallon of olive oil isn’t it. I will be writing a blog post in the future about the myriad of adulterated oils on the market, and how you can steer clear of them, and choose healthy oils for you and you family.
